Tanah Lot Temple

Tanah Lot is a famous temple in South West Bali. The temple sits on top of a rock off the coast. Below the temple are many poisonous black sea snakes – the guardians of the temple. The temple was built in the 17th century after a brahman priest came to Bali and spent some time on the rock. He later asked that a temple be built and that is all that is known about the origins. Nevertheless, this has become one of the six most holy temples in Bali, or Sad Kahyangan.

Tanah Lot can be visited on a half day excursion of South West Bali which will take you to other sites such as the Taman Ayun Temple of Mengwi and the Sangeh Monkey Forest, a forest of nutmeg trees and a large group of mischievous monkeys.
